Words can’t describe the impact the SBI program had on my life.  Mrs. Dunson was the FIRST person to teach me about Wall Street/Stocks, sales/marketing, and how to dress professionally. As if that wasn’t enough, Mrs. Dunson shared with me words of wisdom that would change my life forever….she told me that it didn’t matter where I came from (public housing) what mattered was where I was headed – she taught me to be CONFIDENT no matter who I was dealing with!  Thanks to Mrs. Dunson for taking the time to make a positive impact on my life I have worked with Dick Gregory, Sir Sidney Poitier, TD Jakes, and a host of other celebrities. I also own a very successful photography and graphic design business.

I believe that SBI played a very big part in my decision to acquire degrees in business and communication. It was the hands-on business curriculum that planted the interest to learn more about the business field. It was the public speaking that broke me out of my shell and sparked the desire to improve on this skill. Thanks, Mrs. Dunson and the SBI Program!!!

LEANDRIA HARRIS-DORSEY

Employed by Pennsylvania State Department; Tax Examiner; Harrisburg, PA.

Although circumstances prevented me from going to college upon graduation, I am happy to say that I was among one of the SBI scholars accepted to FAMU! I never attended an institute of higher learning but the skills learned in SBI have been very helpful. For example, the importance of being on time for appointments, meetings, and also work, on a daily basis, is one of the requirements that must be met for considerations in promotions and pay increases. I learned how to dress, prepare and conduct myself throughout the interview process. Happily, I can say that due to the training that I received in SBI, every job interview that I have gone on, I have been offered the job for which I applied. SBI stressed the importance of teamwork and working together to accomplish a common goal. Working through conflict was a part of that process and I can assure you that in the workforce you are guaranteed conflict. Knowing how to respond in a way that will not only allow you to get your point across but also not alienate you from your co-workers is a skill that I am still perfecting but the foundation came from my SBI training.

Also, the leadership skills learned through SBI have really been beneficial. Because of this training, I have been able to develop and maintain a very good relationship with my superiors in all the positions I have occupied. They have noted that my attitude and approachableness are essential building blocks with which to be equipped in the working world, and that they are especially desirable in upper management positions.

My whole experience in SBI was very rewarding and beneficial. Even though it was not fully appreciated at the time, I am grateful that I have that background because it has definitely given me an edge in the working world.

While in the Marine Corps he was able to complete his Bachelor of Science in Business, graduating from the University of Maryland, University College. In 2007 due to a service connected injury Laurence was medically discharged from the Marine Corps.  As a disabled veteran Laurence realized that he may no longer be able to serve in the military but could still do his part by serving the military. The School of Business and Industry Prep Program helped to lay the foundation for many things I have accomplished in my professional career. It was through the “shadowing” experience where I found my niche’ for public relations/communications and I have continued to build upon that since then. My true passion for education, helping others, being creative, dedicated and determined to accomplish every goal I have set forth was always instilled in me and was molded and began to flourish in the SBI program. All of these qualities have truly shaped me into the young woman I am today and I give thanks and appreciation to the SBI program, but more importantly Mrs. Dunson for having the vision, passion, understanding and unconditional love to teach us and have faith in us to make a difference in life.

SBI enhanced and sharpened some qualities I already possessed. I wouldn’t trade my SBI experience for anything. In those years, we learned to be responsible, organized, multi-taskers. Our class opened the store at the Harrisburg [East] Mall. We began as a kiosk and juggled those hours with the physical school store alongside event coverage and our own extra-curricular activities and part-time jobs.  In those years, we learned what it meant to be accountable and to stand on our word. One of my take- aways to this day is to always introduce yourself with a strong hand shake and direct eye contact. That ability has served me well in my career all these years later. I’m proud to be an alum of such an amazing program and am honored to have the opportunity to interact with today’s scholars as they are blazing their own paths to excellence.

SBI introduced me to useful tools such as a resume, a business plan and a professional portfolio. I gained confidence in my public speaking through participation in the Oral Presentations. Much of what I learned in SBI has supported my personal and professional growth over the years. I am thankful for Mrs. Dunson and the other adults who gave their time, talent, and treasure to my SBI class. Because of those positive interactions, I decided to join the SBI Advisory Board. How SBI has helped me? First of all, SBI is a great program because it prepares the students to be leaders in life while helping them acquire the skills necessary to be very good speakers, writers, or whatever they want to be. At first, I was reluctant about the program because I thought that it was a lot of work and I could not see how this class was going to help me. But after sticking it out, I found out that I was a smart man for staying in the class because I learned so much and I was around people who were just as smart and ambitious as I was. From all the reports we had to write to all the presentations we had to give to all the projects we had to do, I would and I am recommending this program to all the students who are eligible because in the end, this program is an invaluable tool to help students not only be great and prosperous students but also great and prosperous people as well.

“I attribute a big part of my success (MBA, CPA) to the SBI program. . . .”

My SBI experience has become an important part of my testimony. It was one of the most memorable experiences that helped to shape me into the woman I am today. SBI taught me how to excel in public speaking and how to be a leader as well as a team player. I was very fortunate to have gone through the SBI journey with three of my closest friends (Rica Nelson, Kiandra Poteat, and Janine Rawls). I don’t think any of us truly realized how blessed we were to be chosen for such a prestigious program, nor could we comprehend at the time the lasting impact that it would have on us throughout our lives. It was through SBI that we created some of our best high school memories that we still reflect on today! Mrs. Dunson continues to hold the title of “The best teacher I have ever had!” Her example and passion for education inspired me to go into the education field myself. I remember when we had to select a career for our “shadow” day and at the time, I thought I wanted to be in advertising because I enjoyed being creative and I thought they made a lot of money. However, after shadowing two people in that field, I quickly learned that it was not what I wanted to do. I remember coming to her and discussing this and she asked me what I would really want to do and I replied, “I would be a teacher but they just don’t make enough money.” I will never forget the day Mrs. Dunson gave me the book Marva Collin’s Way and told me to read it. Reading that book solidified my desire to become an educator. I am currently the Dean of an Upper Elementary School and proud alumni of the SBI family!

I have reached some of the goals that I had set back in SBI.  The skills and tools that I learned in SBI have helped me to succeed in life.  As a teacher now, I see what it takes to teach and develop young minds into positive, productive citizens.  The most appreciated skill that I learned in SBI was goal setting.  I remember during my senior year I set the goal to become a teacher and I now feel a great sense of accomplishment.  I set a goal to achieve my Master’s in Multicultural Education and have achieved that as well. I have now set higher goals and plan to achieve them as well.  I thought I would share this with you to show how much of an impact educators can have on students.  I hope to have similar influences on my students.

ANDRE JOHNSTON (Married)

Bloomsburg University of PA; B.A., Computer Information Systems; Harrisburg University, MS, Project Management; Employer: Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC, Network Administrator

For me, SBI was more than a class I attended to receive a grade. It was a second home, my class of ’99 classmates was my family and Mrs. Dunson was our parent. Like a parent, Mrs. Dunson was great at knowing how to push us past our comfort level and instilling life-long skills I still use today.

SBI has helped me in several different ways. The team involvement that was laid out in the first day of SBI was the most important skill I carried from SBI. By being a part of the SBI family, I was given three years of practice to become the ideal teammate while many of my peers in college had to put time into adjusting to working with others. I was able to voice my ideas like a leader but also listen to other team members’ ideas as well. Along with team skills, I also attained communication skills, and time management skills. Besides skills that I will carry with me for the rest of my life, I also found shadowing people in my career field to be helpful. Shadowing was helpful to me because it gave me an opportunity to see first-hand the result of completing four years of college knowing how to push us past our comfort level and instilling life-long skills I still use today.

My inspirational thoughts about the program, I love you guys.  The program provided a great nurturing foundation for students before we set off onto our journey called life, be it whatever fields we went into. My favorite memory of being in SBI was being a witness to the drive, dedication, and true investment that Mrs. Dunson, along with her husband, had to the program and its students. It is because of them that we were successful during our time in the program and I am forever grateful.

The training that I received in SBI has been beneficial in helping me to prepare myself to step into the corporate world with confidence.

Focus. SBI produces hard-working, dependable, and focused achievers who are committed to excellence in every task. This internal fire, to “burn for excellence”, pushes me to do my best, meet new challenges, as well as confidently and effectively perform under pressure.

Teamwork. In SBI we learned to work together, regardless of differences. The communication and team-building skills that I gained from the program have been very helpful in preparing me to deal with others in real work situations.

Networking. During my three years in SBI, I developed many lasting relationships (peer and professional). Having a network, like the one you acquire in SBI, is priceless as a young professional- a step ahead that many young people do not have.

SBI was a very valuable experience and has played a significant role in my life and will surely continue to impact my future.

SBI taught me to be confident and intentional when I speak, to utilize my resources/network and to always present myself professionally – these are tools that I use to this day in my career as a physician. As a primary care provider, patients need to feel comfortable trusting me with personal details about themselves within minutes of our encounters and have confidence in me to care for them, communicate with them on their level, and coordinate the care with various other members of their care team (be that specialist providers and/or family members). I am proud to have had the strong foundation of SBI to teach me these skills when I was still trying to discover myself and come to the profession of medicine.

Participating in SBI granted me the opportunity to surround myself with some of the greatest minds.  It was a blessing to be amongst such an elite group of students who all had unimaginable dreams.  The real life responsibilities of running a business not only prepared me for my next chapter (college), but helped guide me through handling challenges in graduate school and my professional career.  Ultimately, what I value most about SBI was having Ms. Dunson as a mentor and role model!   SBI is one of a kind and I’m so honored to have been a part of the program. SBI is one of a kind and I’m so honored to have been a part of the program.

SBI is an excellent introduction to business development, entrepreneurship and the professional work in general

“Shannon interned at the Bronx Defenders, which provides holistic defense in criminal, civil, immigration, and family court proceedings stemming from criminal arrests. Shannon worked in the Civil Action Practice, where she wrote legal memoranda, conducted legal research, provided immediate legal counseling during client intake, assisted attorneys in housing court hearings, and advocated for public benefits. The Civil Action Practice was a rewarding way for Shannon to diversify her practice areas yet still address the collateral effects of criminal charges. Witnessing the interdisciplinary representation offered in this dynamic office deeply affected Shannon’s approach to holistic defense.” – Copied from NYU Root – Tilden-Kern Scholarship Program Fall 2010 News

Jacobson Public Service Scholar for Women, Children & Families Shannon graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Spelman College in 2008, where she served three-year tenure on the Spelman College Board of Trustees, reigned as Miss NAACP, was secretary of the Pre-Law Society, and volunteered on the Essence Cares National Mentoring Initiative Steering Committee and UPS Community Service Scholarship Program. Her legal journey in public service began the summer following high school when she interned with a law partner at Goldberg Katzman, working on criminal defense cases for young indigent clients. During college, she interned at the Mayor’s Office in the City of Atlanta and the Fulton County Public Defender’s Office. Shannon also served as a fellow at the Fulton County Office of Child Advocate Attorneys through the Arthur Liman Public Interest Fellowship from Yale Law School. Shannon views law as an ideal medium to establish balance on the scales of justice. She is particularly passionate about child welfare and criminal justice reform and hopes to achieve a system of equality and rehabilitation as a juvenile justice attorney, activist, and judge. Shannon grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Florida A&M University School of Business & Industry Prep Program at Harrisburg High. – Copied from Root-Tilden-Kern and D’Agostino Class of 2012 ~ NYU Root -Tilden-Kern Scholarship Program Fall 2009 News

Exposure truly is empowerment! Mrs. Clenistine Dunson gave new dimension to the term teacher. She reached beyond herself to awaken the potential that sometimes lay dormant in a young scholar. By creating an atmosphere ripe for learning, students felt individually and collectively inspired. I, personally, gained a new confidence to explore my gifts. Because I was exposed to possibility, compassion and unconditional goodness, I can make a meaningful deposit in the next generation…

SBI changed my life. It was the missing link that I needed in order to have a successful and prosperous future. It was because Mrs. Dunson didn’t give up on me and believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself that I am where I am”. Cliché but she saw the best in me when everyone else literally only could see the worst. Without SBI and Mrs. Dunson I would’ve been another statistic.

I was the third out of my family to be in the SBI Prep Program. My brother Christopher O’Bannon who now resides in Nashville, TN, working as a Chemist graduated in 1996 and my sister Amber Mills who now resides in New Orleans, LA working as a teacher and assistant principal was a 2006 graduate of the program. My experience in the SBI Program has helped to shape how I performed in my later life. Although not recognizable at the time of going through the program, I can now reflect on the many experiences and task that I received in the program that helped me to maneuver through college and graduate school with ease. The professionalism that was taught in SBI is something I always carry with me in my current role as a Social Worker for the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, DC. The various trips and meeting with different companies gave insight to various careers and college life. Oral presentations have made me a fearless public speaker. I’m often asked to do speaking at work, and in college I was often asked to speak on behalf on my various organizations. I passed our mandatory speech course with flying colors! Most importantly, SBI instilled in me what it means to be a team player: how to work with others, when to take the back seat, and how to lead.  For my future endeavors, SBI has provided me with the basic entrepreneurial and business skills needed to allow me to plan and hopefully my own successful private practice in the near future.

My experience in SBI was helpful. It really helped exposed me to the professional world in a way that I could never experience anywhere else. I was also given the opportunity to develop as a leader by serving as the president of the SBI store which I feel was very instrumental in allowing me to build confidence and leadership skills. Lastly I feel as though SBI helped me to discover myself. I never realized how great of a public speaker I was until I was given the platform to shine in that area.

How SBI Help Prepare Me for College: Through workshops and field trips to different Fortune 500 Businesses I gained exposure to the real world of business and its many aspects. Not to mention, working in two small businesses, one in Harrisburg High School and the other at Harrisburg Mall, I was able to gain experience working with others; associating with various ethnicities, learning a bit about multicultural diversity. After several slaps to the head from Mrs. Dunson and her remarkable advisory board, I was able to become a leader as well as a strategic follower by first following with intentions to lead at some point. I was also able to develop time management skills that were incorporated in my everyday life as a college student. Ultimately, I grew and learned several lessons consisting of; never giving up, always manage my time because life is about balance, dress for success, and to work smart, not hard. The School of Business & Industry Prep Program (SBI) has helped me to develop leadership abilities, presentation skills, writing skills, public speaking skills, analytical skills, proper business etiquette, and a lot more; some of the many techniques and skills that the School of Business & Industry at Florida A&M University (FAMU) is teaching to its college students. I maintained a solid 3.3 GPA at FAMU and I’d say my learning from the SBI Prep Program had a lot to do with my success thus far.  “I am a SBI COUGAR but I am also a SBI RATTLER!!!”
