COURSE Offerings

The Harrisburg High School, School of Business & Industry Honors Prep Program (SBI) is a competitive, innovative business and industry honors college and career preparatory program where students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average in order to be accepted. The program involves rigorous innovative courses of study with exposure to the “real world professional experiences” for high achievers.

9th Grade Honors Class: Intro to SBI & Professional Development

Prerequisite: Grade of “B” or above in all Core Classes (English, Math, Science and Social Studies); Personal statement expressing Who Am I & Why I Am Interested in the SBI Program; Good behavior records; Counselor and Core Subject Teacher Recommendations. 

This is a one-year honors business course designed to prepare students for acceptance into SBI Honors Program and to introduce students to 21st century skills focusing on critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and technology literacy that will prepare them for success in the world of work and higher education. This course provides students with the opportunity to acquire an understanding of the expectations for the student’s performance for the duration of their SBI high school matriculation and help them to quickly learn why SBI Scholars are recognized as outstanding student leaders and why they are expected to perform accordingly. 

Students will be introduced to the 12 Principles of Business Success which includes 21st Century Skills:

Students will be required to dress professionally once a week.

Females

Males

  • Dress Pants (Khakis not acceptable)

Admission is by application.

All of the items listed below must be submitted to the student’s 8th grade counselor who will submit to SBI Admissions Team. It is the student’s responsibility to deliver the required material to his/her teachers and guidance counselor according to the instructions on these forms and to follow up with each one to ensure that all materials are submitted by deadline.

A complete application for the 2020-2021 school year must be submitted by July 15, 2020.

Parents/guardians and students will be notified of admissions status as soon as possible after application is recieved.

10th Grade Honors Class: School of Business & Industry I (SBI I)

Prerequisite: GPA – 3.0 (85%) or above; Contractual Agreement

New Applicants: Interview; Written Essay; Teacher Recommendations; Contractual Agreement

The course is designed to orient scholars to the real world professional experiences in order to ensure a smooth transition from high school to college and/or career path. Phase I (SBI I) helps scholars develop and/or reinforce skills that are fundamental to their academic success as well as their professional and personal development. Scholars gain meaningful experience and develop lifelong relationships through mentorships, professional business shadowing, and field trips. In addition, the scholars are exposed to traditional, nontraditional, and unexplored career paths.

The scholars also learn and apply key business concepts along with further study and application of the 12 Principles to Business Success which include 21st Century Skills:

Scholars will also be required to dress professionally once a week.

SBI professional dress consist of the young men wearing dark slacks with a belt if there are belt-loops, dress shirts, ties, and dress shoes and the young ladies wearing knee-length dresses with sleeves, suits, or skirts and blouses with sleeves, pantyhose and dress shoes with enclosed toes and strap on back or back enclosed. No bare midriffs allowed. Young ladies do not have to be wear heels, they can wear flat shoes.

11th Grade Honors Class: School of Business & Industry II (SBI II)

Prerequisite: GPA – 3.0 (85%) or above; SBI I Honors

This course is a continuation of SBI I. A major focus is entrepreneurism. The students learn to develop a business plan through collaboration and teamwork as well as how to present it to loan officers for consideration for a loan. They are also exposed to financial markets, which will broaden their exposure to a variety of economic topics designed to enhance their business and financial literacy. Emphasis is also placed on taking (SAT/ACT), and making preparation for acceptance into college, and making the sound career decision. 

12th Grade Honors Class: School of Business & Industry III (SBI III)

Prerequisite: GPA – 3.0 (85%) or above; SBI II Honors

This course is a continuation of SBI II where students apply theories learned in the previous courses. They experience the joys of operating a student-owned business – a school store, The Cougar Den. Students will learn entrepreneurial skills such as financial operations, procurement operations, supply chain management, and customer services skills. They will design items, market the items and learn all the principles of operating a retail business. Students will develop a thorough understanding of retail operations and learn to function productively within a team. Emphasis will also be placed on post secondary college and career preparation.
